Mick Schumacher discusses Aston Martin speculation after Sebastian Vettel announcement

Mick Schumacher has said he’s not paying any attention to talk about him replacing Sebastian Vettel at Aston Martin for next season.

The four-time world champion made the announcement yesterday that he was going to leave Formula 1 at the end of the season, and of course speculation quickly started over who would replace him for 2023.

Indeed, one of the names to be linked with a move to the Silverstone-based team was Schumacher’s, with his contract at Haas up at the end of the year and with Seb also having a close personal relationship with him.

Naturally, Mick was asked by the press here at the Hungaroring ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend what he thought about such rumours, but typically played it coy with his response:

“Well, you know, obviously, I think there’s still lots to do [at Haas.]

“So that’s where my focus lies at the moment. And, you know, what the future brings we will see.

“I never say never. But, you know, obviously, my focus is Budapest right now with Haas.”

It’ll certainly be interesting to see who moves to Aston with the team having an exciting project but one that clearly needs a few seasons yet to fully achieve its aims.

A younger driver might be better suited to that, then, but with Lance Stroll already in the team Aston might want to add another older head to replace Seb rather than the relatively inexperienced Schumacher.

The speculation has only just begun, though, and there will be plenty of names in the mix between now and Aston making an announcement over their replacement for the four-time world champion.
