Michael van Gerwen leads the way in Premier League

Michael van Gerwen moved three points clear at the top of the Premier League table after beating Peter Wright and James Wade for a third win of the Dutchman's campaign.

Van Gerwen won in Exeter and Brighton last month and ruled the roost at Leeds’ First Direct Arena to claim top spot outright in the standings, three points clear of defending champion Jonny Clayton.

The three-time world champion was granted an automatic route into the semi-finals after Gary Anderson tested positive for Covid, setting up a showdown with Wright, who thrashed Michael Smith 6-2.

In a rematch of this year’s World Championship final, Wright prevailed once more against Smith but an average of 103.99 plummeted to 86.37 when the Scot faced Van Gerwen, who claimed a 6-3 win.

Wade ousted Gerwyn Price in a last-leg shootout and then scored a 6-4 semi-final win over Clayton, who earlier overcame an out-of-sorts Joe Cullen 6-1, but the left-armer proved no match for Van Gerwen.

In the final Van Gerwen averaged 103.87 to claim a convincing 6-1 victory as Wade was left to reflect on a third runners-up finish of the tournament.
