Michael Stewart insists Rangers missed opportunity to bridge huge Celtic goal difference gap despite St Mirren rout

Pundit Michael Stewart was left impressed as Rangers put St Mirren to the sword in Paisley.

But he couldn't help feeling they should have grabbed even more goals than the four they managed through Kemar Roofe's hat-trick and Joe Aribo's beauty.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst returned the deficit at the top of the Scottish Premiership to six points with Celtic still looking likely to take their title bid over the line.

There can be twists and turns aplenty though over the post-split period and Stewart believes Rangers should have scored more to try and catch up to the current +19 goal difference advantage Ange Postecoglou's men enjoy over their rivals, boosted by their 7-0 demolition of St Johnstone on Saturday.

Speaking on BBC Sportscene, Stewart said: “It’s hyper-critical to suggest they’d be disappointed not to score more.

“But when you look at the goal difference and Celtic extending it yesterday, there were a few missed opportunities there today.

“More so, looking towards this hugely important game against Braga in the Europa League.

"4-0 away from home against St Mirren is going to lead into that nicely.

“If they get a result on Thursday it builds up to what is a huge game next weekend."
