Michael Schumacher social media silence broken after first public appearance in 11 years

Michael Schumacher's social media account has posted for the first time in five months following his first public appearance since his tragic accident in 2013.

While on a skiing holiday in the French Alps, Schumacher suffered a severe crash which has significantly changed his life. Updates on his condition have been limited as his family rally around the German racing legend.

The 55-year-old's former team principal at Ferrari Jean Todt told L'Equipe in December: "Michael is here, so I don't miss him. He is simply not the Michael he used to be.

"He is different, and is wonderfully guided by his wife and children who protect him. His life is different now, and I have the privilege of sharing moments with him. That's all there is to say."

Schumacher reportedly made his first public appearance since the accident in September as he attended his daughter Gina-Maria's wedding to Iain Bethke in Majorca. The ceremony was kept private with guests asked to hand in their phones in advance to avoid the legendary driver's appearance being leaked.

Since then, updates have been scarce but his social media account, which remains active but is presumably run by Schumacher's representatives posted for the first time since May on Tuesday. The tweet was in keeping with much of the posts the account publishes these days, paying tribute to the F1 legend's incredible career.

Sharing a couple of images from the podium in 2000, the account wrote: "Exploding emotions. F1 GP Japan, first world championship title with Ferrari on this day in 2000."
