Michael Obafemi performs controversial celebration in front of fuming Cardiff City fans despite backlash last time

Michael Obafemi has risked angering Cardiff City once again after performing the 'swim away' celebration when he opened the scoring for Swansea City in the South Wales derby.

There was uproar from the Bluebirds end following the last derby, during which both Jamie Paterson and Russell Martin did the gesture at the Swansea.com Stadium. At the time, Cardiff confirmed they had contacted the police over a number of incidents they were unhappy with.

There is little to suggest they will be any less pleased with Obafemi's celebration this time around, either. The Swans opened the scoring in the derby clash at Cardiff City Stadium with a scintillating team move just six minutes into the match.

Obafemi played in Paterson down the Swans' right-hand side with a wonderful pass on the edge of the area. Paterson returned the favour, having got behind the Cardiff defence before squaring a lovely cross to put it on a plate for Obafemi, who couldn't miss.

The striker then wasted no time before he ran off in front of the Canton Stand to perform the 'swim away' celebration, which was predictably met with ire from the home supporters.

The 'swim away' gesture references a violent clash between rival supporters following a derby encounter in the 1980s.

Following the backlash Swansea received for both Paterson and the manager doing the celebration last time out, Martin spoke ahead of the clash to confirm that he would not do it again if his team were victorious on Saturday.

"I don’t think I appreciated the backlash," Martin said during his pre-match press conference on Friday. "Maybe everyone got carried away with the emotion of it.
