Micah Richards & Jamie Carragher mock Peter Schmeichel's claim that Man Utd can win CL

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel was mocked by Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards after making the ambitious claim that his former side could win the Champions League this season.

United face Atletico Madrid in the last-16 and the La Liga champions are favourites to progress to the quarter-finals, with the Red Devils travelling to Spain next week for the first leg.

Ralf Rangnick has somewhat steadied the ship at Old Trafford following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure, with United conceding fewer goals.

But the Red Devils face an uphill battle to gain a place in the top-four, nevermind entering the latter stages of the Champions League.

Nevertheless, Schmeichel – who captained United to victory in the 1999 final – told Micah Richards on CBS Sports that he believes his former side can win the competition for the third time in their history.

But his claim was met with rip-roaring laughter from former Man City ace Richards and his colleague Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher.

The pair were besides themselves at Schmeichel’s claim, clearly feeling that United have no chance of winning the tournament.

Liverpool won the competition for the sixth time in 2019, while City are still seeking their first after losing last year’s final to Chelsea.

United got back to winning ways in the Premier League on Tuesday night after a 2-0 victory against Brighton.

Cristiano Ronaldo ended a seven-game scoreless run by opening the scoring shortly after the break and Bruno Fernandes added another in the 97th minute.
