Miami Open: Iga Swiatek and Naomi Osaka gain last eight

Soon to be World No 1 Iga Swiatek made quick work of 14th seeded American Coco Gauff to reach the Miami Open quarterfinals and continue an impressive WTA 1000 winning streak.

Earlier, Naomi Osaka had beaten Alison Riske to set up a quarterfinal date with another American in Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins.

Swiatek could become the fourth woman to win Indian Wells and Miami in the same season, completing the so-called “Sunshine Double.”

Despite the early loss of a number of seeded players, the quarterfinals are all set to be intriguing matches.

Against Gauff, Swiatek was unable to convert any of her first six break points. However, she took control when she unleashed a big backhand return to secure a break for a 4-3 lead.

Gauff’s power set her up with two chances to break back in the very next game, but Swiatek gutsed out that game and, eventually, the set.

That isolated pair would be the only two break points Gauff held all day as Swiatek dominated the second set, at one points rattling off 14 points in a row.

Playing Riske for the first time since 2019, Osaka snapped a 1-1 head-to-head tie between the two with a 92-minute 6-3, 6-4 victory.

The triumph ensures that Osaka reaches the last eight at the Miami Open in successive seasons.

Osaka started the match with a nearly 10-minute service hold that extended to six deuces, saving four break points along the way.

Incredibly, Osaka broke Riske in the next game to seize control of the match with a massive early momentum swing. She held onto the lead for the set, losing just seven subsequent points on serve.
