Mets remove interim manager tag, hire Andy Green to 3-year deal - ESPN

The New York Mets have removed the interim tag from manager Andy Green, hiring him to a three-year deal through the 2029 season, the team announced Tuesday.

The Mets have performed well since Green took over as interim manager, with a record of 37-38, after Carlos Mendoza was fired at the end of June.

The worst-case scenario — that the Mets would effectively roll over down the stretch — did not occur, with young players such as Carson Benge and Nolan McLean continuing to develop under Green's watch.

«Andy has connected with and pushed our players to perform, despite the disappointment of the season,» Mets owners Steve and Alex Cohen said in a statement. «Over the last several months he has brought discipline, accountability and positivity to the clubhouse, attributes we were seeking in our next manager.»

Green, who served as vice president of player development before being named interim manager by Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns, managed the San Diego Padres for nearly four seasons from 2016 to 2019, going 274-366.

Upon initially moving him into the managerial role, Stearns said Green would move back to the front office after the season.

«When I accepted the interim role, I didn't anticipate it becoming permanent, but the more time I spent with our players and staff, the clearer it became that this is where my passion and experience could make the greatest impact,» Green said in a statement.
