Met Office warns more severe weather warnings will be issued this week

The Met Ofice has issued a warning of more severe weather conditions hitting the UK this week.

Frequent weather warnings have been issued over recent days due to the impact of Storm Dudley, Eunice and Franklin affecting the UK.

Most notably, southwest parts of England and southern parts of Wales were issued an extremely rare red weather warning for wind last week which advised people in the area to not leave their homes.

It said it is likely that more National Severe Weather Warnings will be imposed this week, although the risk of impact is lower than we have seen in the past few days.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Andy Page, said: “A strong jet stream is driving weather systems across the North Atlantic with a succession of weather fronts moving into the UK bringing more wet and windy weather at times this week.

“As Storm Franklin clears the UK and pushes into the near continent this afternoon the windy conditions will gradually ease and showers become fewer, leaving some dry, sunny weather for many.”

The Met Office added that more wind and heavy rain is expected across the north and west of England throughout the week with potential snow or sleet hitting some areas.

It also noted that Thursday will potentially be the coldest day of the week with frost being seen across the country alongside gusty winds and heavy rain as well as snow in some parts of the north.

While the weather is expected to settle by Friday, another windy spell that will mostly affect the north will start during the weekend.

The Met Office added: "We are expecting to issue further National Severe Weather warnings this week, but the risk of impacts is lower than we have seen in recent days."
