Met Office extends Greater Manchester thunderstorm warning as torrential rain batters UK

The Met Office has extended a yellow thunderstorm warning for parts of the UK - including for some of Greater Manchester.

The weather warning came into place at 9am today (Wednesday). It has now been extended to last until 8pm tonight.

In areas covered by the warning, which includes parts of Stockport, Tameside, Manchester, Trafford and Salford, heavy showers and thunderstorms are forecast. The downpours 'may cause some flooding and travel disruption'.

Lightning strikes may cause some building damage, according to the Met Office, while driving conditions are likely to be affected by the heavy rain. Delays to train services 'are possible' while there may be 'short term loss of power' in some areas.

in Greater Manchester, following heavy rainfall overnight, showers are forecast until around 11am this morning. Clouds will then set in before rain is expected to fall again at around 3pm, according to the Met Office.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Dan Suri, said: "An unseasonably deep area of low pressure for the time of year will move into Ireland during the early hours of Wednesday then continue across Wales and England during Wednesday daytime. Heavy rain associated with this low will affect large parts of the UK tonight and on Wednesday, some of the heaviest rain occurring on Wednesday over central parts of England and Wales where some locations could see 40mm of rain in just a few hours from thundery downpours.
