Meet new Sports Minister, Senator John Owan-Enoh

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Wednesday, named Senator John Owan-Enoh as the country’s new Sports Minister.

He replaces Sunday Dare, who ruled the sports sector during the second tenure of immediate past president, Muhammadu Buhari.

Senator Owan-Enoh is an APC chieftain, who became very visible during the last general elections when he took the party to court over the conduct of Cross River State gubernatorial primaries.

After losing the ticket to Senator Bassey Otu, he challenged and lost the case at both the high court and the Court of Appeal.

He was later compelled on by President Tinubu, then the APC presidential candidate, to drop the case and work in the interest of the party.

Explaining his decision to heed Asiwaju Tinubu’s appeal, Ewah-Enoh said, “The public appeal by the presidential candidate and National Leader of our party is such a humbling experience, which I cannot ignore under any circumstances.”

The 57-year-old Owan-Enoh had his early Education at St. Gregory Primary School, Agbokim Waterfalls and St. Augustine Junior Seminary, Abakaliki in the present Ebonyi State.

His was once enrolled into the junior seminary in anticipation of joining the Catholic priesthood, but he left that path to seek and gain admission at the University of Calabar, where he obtained a Masters’ degree in Demography.

He was a lecturer in the same university until 1999 when he ran and won election under the platform of All Peoples Party (APP) to represent Etung State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly.

In 2003, he was elected a member of Federal House of Representatives on Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) platform.
