McIlroy opened his tournament with a two-under 70 and improved on that on Friday to move to five-under overall.
Australian Cameron Smith also carded a second-round 69 to get to eight-under and the outright lead, one clear of the USA's Denny McCarthy and KH Lee of South Korea.
Shane Lowry slipped down the leaderboard as an even-par 72 left him on three-over. The Offaly man had an up-and-down back nine but a birdie on 17 at least sent him to the clubhouse on something of a high.
Seamus Power meanwhile has missed the cut. The Waterford man shot a four-over 76 which left him on four-over for the tournament, two shots outside the cut mark.
