McGinn's family allegiances divided for Scotland's showdown with Hungary

STUTTGART, Germany : There will be divided loyalties in Scotland midfielder John McGinn's family when he turns out for his country against Hungary on Sunday at Euro 2024 with a spot in the last 16 on the line.

The 29-year-old's uncle Joe lives in Sopron, which is near the western border of Hungary, while his two young cousins, Mark and Tamas, are half Hungarian. It made for some lively discussions when the Euro draw was announced, with Sunday's clash circled on calendars.

"One of (my cousins) wants Scotland to win, one of them wants Hungary to win," McGinn said. "So they will have a win/win scenario, but for us I hope young Tamas is sad tomorrow night.

"It's obviously really strange, they're huge supporters of mine, for them going to school every day, it's quite nice that they can share the same surname although some of the boys in school don't really believe it," the Aston Villa player said.

McGinn said his cousins attended Villa's final home game of the Premier League season against Liverpool on May 13th.

"They were more interested in big (Dominik) Szoboszlai than their big cousin," McGinn said, in reference to the Hungarian midfielder who plays for Liverpool.

"It's obviously a nice touch to (Sunday's Euro) game."
