McEleney: Cup silverware just the start for Derry City

Derry City captain Patrick McEleney says claiming silverware is just the starting point for his team after a comprehensive 4-0 win over Shelbourne in today's Extra.ie FAI Cup final at the Aviva Stadium.

Ruaidhri Higgins' side were a cut above in a one-sided final, where Cameron McJannet’s brace was sandwiched between Jamie McGonigle’s 18th-minute opener and Jordan McEneff’s injury-time spot-kick.

The Candystripes pushed Shamrock Rovers in the title race this season before ultimately falling short, but the cup success could propel the club to bigger and better things according to skipper McEleney.

"It’s amazing," he told RTÉ Sport afterwards.

"There was a bit of pressure on us to win the game and I think we performed really well. I’m just glad for everyone at the club.

"This is a start. We needed to get that first one, and that first one is here. We’re here to win now. It’s not about coming third or competing, it’s about winning trophies."

Player of the match McJannet took his first goal with aplomb, but admitted that his second was somewhat more fortuitous, getting on the end of a corner on the hour mark to effectively end the game as a contest.

"I just stepped in and got a lucky tap in," the 24-year-old defender said.
