McCrohan places just outside medals at European Rowing Championships

Siobhan McCrohan finished just outside the medals in the lightweight women's single sculls after putting in a late surge to place fourth in the A final at the European Rowing Championships in Lake Bled in Slovenia.

The Galway rower had finished second in her heat before winning Friday's repechage to book her place in the final.

In a final dominated by Romania's Ionela Cozmiuc, McCrohan was well outside contention for long stretches but a strong finish saw her claim fourth spot, just one place shy of a medal.

Cozmiuc took gold for Romania, almost three seconds clear of Greece's Evangelia Anastasiadou, with the Czech Republic's Kristyna Neuhortova taking bronze.

Earlier, Imogen Magner and Natalie Long won their B final in the Women's pair, beating the Czech Republic into second spot.

The men's four team of John Kearney, Ross Corrigan, Nathan Timoney and Fionnán McQuillan-Tolan finished fourth in their B final, while Brian Colsh finished second in the C final of the men's single sculls.

Later this morning, Irish medal hopefuls Sanita Puspure and Zoe Hyde go in the final of the women's double sculls [11.37am].

Philip Doyle and Daire Lynch are also chasing a medal in the final of the men's double sculls [11.53am].
