McCormack seventh in women's marathon

Fionnuala McCormack has secured a seventh-placed finish in the women's marathon at the European Championships in Munich.

The four-time Olympian was in the leading pack for the majority of the race, won by Poland’s Aleksandra Lisowska in a time of 2:28:36, but fell off ahead of the final few kilometres before a strong finish saw her clock a time of 2:29:25.

McCormack hit the front just past the 11-kilmoetre mark of the race, and she remained in the leading pack until the 35km mark where she fell off.

Despite falling down to ninth, she enjoyed a strong finish to the line to move up a couple of places.

Ann-Marie McGlynn was just inside the top 30 with her time of 2:34:15 proving good enough for 28th while Aoife Cooke was 33rd with her time of 2:40:37.

Coratia’s Matea Parlov Koštro took silver but there was disappointment for the home crowd as Germany’s Miriam Dattke dramatically lost out on bronze.

Dattke and Nienke Brinkman both crossed the line in a time of 2:25:06, but the decision went to the Dutch runner.
