He's only 24 years old, but Max Verstappen has quite literally lived his young life in the fast lane.
The Red Bull driver won his first world title in dramatic fashion last December, overtaking Lewis Hamilton on the final lap of a controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to be crowned champion. He'll start Sunday's Bahrain Grand Prix, the first of 2022, second on the grid and has been widely backed to retain his title this year.
Regardless, the Dutchman has already cemented his position as a global star, and his recent contract reflects that. This month, he agreed to a mouth-watering five-year extension to his current deal, which runs until the end of 2023.
Under the terms, Verstappen is set to make a huge £40 million a year, meaning he could earn in excess of £200 million from the deal in annual wages alone. And without factoring it a potential £17 million in bonus incentives that the contract reportedly incorporates.
His current net worth stands at £45.5 million, according to givemesport.com. However, that sum is set to rise considerably on the back of him committing his long-term future to Christian Horner and co.
Hamilton, of course, still leads the way in F1 earners. Last year, Forbes magazine rated him the eighth best-paid sportsman in the world, with an annual income of £62million.
But Verstappen, guided by his father, the ex-F1 driver Jos,
