Max Verstappen admits Red Bull struggles despite strong qualifying
Max Verstappen has revealed that he is still not feeling comfortable in the Red Bull car despite landing P2 in qualifying for tomorrow’s Australian Grand Prix.
The Albert Park circuit hosts its first race since 2019 on Sunday with Charles Leclerc set to lead the field away, with Verstappen alongside him on the front row.
Despite another strong Saturday showing, though, Max actually revealed to Sky after the session that he still wasn’t fully happy at the wheel of the RB18, and he feels that there is a lot more still to come from them as an overall package.
“I mean I would have hoped to have started first but we have to accept where we finished.
“The whole weekend has been a bit tricky for me and all over the place, I’ve never really been able to find a stable grip in the front or rear and that’s just not nice but that’s been the case for me this season where I’ve not been able to find a comfortable balance where I could really attack corners in qualifying especially.
“It’s something very new for me because in the last few years I’ve been very comfortable where even if I’ve had little issues in qualifying I could still extract quite a good lap so it’s been really tough.
“Of course I’m talking like I’m P18 but I think we have a lot more potential in the car but we’re not showing it and that’s a shame.”
“I think in the race the temperatures will stabilise a bit and the car becomes easier to drive where you don’t need to search for that one lap performance, which our car seems a bit on the edge with, but in the race we have a bit more balance on the long runs Friday we had a bit of control.”
