Matilda the Musical: When is Netflix's adaptation released in the UK and who is in the cast?

Matilda, one of Roald Dahl's all-time classics, will be returning to the big screen later this year with a musical twist thanks to Netflix. The stage show, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, first opened on stage in 2010.

Since then, the Royal Shakespeare Company production has been performed worldwide and has received countless awards, including seven Olivier Awards and five Tony Awards. Now, those who missed it on stage will be able to catch it on screen thanks to streaming giant Netflix.

The musical adaptation has been directed by Matthew Warchus and written by Dennis Kelly. According to Shortlist, Matilda is the second-most popular Roald Dahl book, being beaten to the top spot by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Matilda the Musical will debut in the UK on Netflix. It will be available to stream from November 25th.

Taking the title role will be Alisha Weir after giving an audition that director Matthew Warchus said was "unforgettable". Thirteen-year-old Weir has won rave reviews from critics, who hail her as "one to watch".

Joining her at Crunchem Hall will be Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey. Originally, Ralph Finnes was picked to play the terrifying Miss Trunchbull - traditionally, the role on stage has been played by men - however, it was announced that instead Dame Emma Thompson will fill the headmistress's shoes.

Weir's on-screen family the Wormwoods will include Stephen Graham as Mr Wormwood and Andrea Riseborough as his bingo-loving wife. Mrs Phelps, the kind-hearted librarian who fosters Matilda's love of books, will be played by Sindhu Vee.
