Martinelli red card: Rio Ferdinand was not happy with decision to send off Arsenal star

Gabriel Martinelli received one of the craziest red cards in Premier League history on Thursday evening.

The lightning-quick Arsenal forward was shown two yellow cards in the space of just six seconds by referee Michael Oliver in the 1-0 win away at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Martinelli’s first booking was due to the fact that he pushed Daniel Podence as the Wolves man was trying to take a quick throw-in.

The second was because Martinelli sprinted back after that incident and then fouled Nelson Semedo to put a halt to a counter-attack by the home side.

Because play hadn’t stopped between the two incidents, Oliver brandished both yellow cards in Martinelli’s direction at the same time, which is something we’ve never seen in Premier League action before.

The red card was the hot topic of debate on BT Sport after the match had concluded and Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand was far from happy.

As the segment analysing the decision to send Martinelli off started, Ferdinand boldly said: “He wants to be in the news the ref, doesn’t he.”
