Martin O’Neill vows to drive Celtic forward after signing one-year deal

Martin O’Neill vowed to drive Celtic forward following last season’s rescue act as he committed himself to at least another year in charge.

O’Neill has signed a new one-year contract with the option for a further campaign after leading the Hoops to a league and Scottish Cup double in his second spell in charge last term.

The 74-year-old kicked off Celtic’s sustained dominance of Scottish football in the first five years of the century and described it as a “great privilege” to continue as manager.

“Last season will live long in all our memories and to be part of that success has in a big way whetted the appetite to work again for more days like those and bring our supporters those moments,” he said on Celtic’s website.

The former Republic of Ireland manager led Celtic to nine consecutive wins to round off the season in style.

O’Neill steadied the ship after the sudden departure of Brendan Rodgers and won seven out of eight games before returning again after the brief but disastrous reign of Wilfried Nancy, who lost six out of his eight matches.

Celtic won 19 fixtures and drew two of O’Neill’s 23 William Hill Premiership games in charge and he also led them to two cup wins over Rangers as well as progress to the Europa League knockout stage.

“We know of course that Celtic can never rest on past success so we are now aiming to drive forward together in the coming season as we aim to deliver again for the club and our fans,” said O’Neill, who has now won nine trophies as Celtic manager.

Confirmation of O’Neill’s appointment came hours after reports had claimed the news had been delayed amid uncertainty over his backroom staff.
