Mark Warburton delivers injury update on key QPR player ahead of Millwall clash
Queens Park Rangers attacker Chris Willock is a doubt to return to action when the Hoops cross the River Thames on Tuesday night to face Millwall in Championship action, says head coach Mark Warburton.
The ex-Arsenal man, who was signed from Benfica in 2020, has been in top form for the R’s this season, scoring 7 times and assisting a further 10 goals.
It’s a major step up on Willock’s tally for the 2020-21 campaign, where he scored just three times and his absence was felt strongly this past weekend when QPR were defeated 1-0 away at bottom side Barnsley.
It was just the second league match that the 24-year-old had missed all season but it was QPR’s first loss in seven matches, and during that unbeaten run the winger netted twice and recorded six assists.
Whilst there is hope from Warburton that Willock is passed fit to feature, he can’t be certain of his availability ahead of the battle with the Lions.
“We’ll see how he is,” Warburton said of Willock, per West London Sport.
“There’s a medical meeting later today (Monday) and I’ll find out where we are.
“I’m hopeful, but don’t know.”
The Verdict
Judging by the performance on Saturday against lowly Barnsley, QPR really need Willock back desperately to have a better chance of getting a result.
He’s come on leaps and bounds this season in a system that suits both him and Ilias Chair playing in the same team and he’s one of the main reasons as to why the Hoops are fourth in the Championship.
Having missed just one match though before the Barnsley encounter, perhaps Willock’s setback was one that was picked up due to playing too much.
However he is that important to the team that he simply has to feature if he’s fit, such is the effectiveness of his end product this season.
