Marcus Trescothick: I want to be England head coach one day

Marcus Trescothick has revealed his ambitions to be head coach of his country in future and called on the England and Wales Cricket Board to appoint homegrown coaches to lead Hundred franchises.

In a wide-ranging interview in the latest edition of the “Vaughany and Tuffers” podcast, Trescothick talks about how he would like to widen his coaching experience by working abroad, reveals Brendon McCullum’s team speech before Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes dramatically led England to victory at Trent Bridge, and believes the top seven have the potential to be “very feared around the world in Test cricket”.

He also says it is time to give English coaches increased experience so the next time the national job becomes available there are more candidates for the role. 

Rob Key, the team director, has made this one of his targets after acknowledging when he appointed McCullum and Matthew Mott that there was a dearth of English coaches qualified enough to be considered for the Test and white-ball jobs.

“I do have aspirations to be a head coach. I know I want to do it in county cricket, franchise cricket and potentially international cricket down the line,” said Trescothick, who missed the final preparations for this week’s third Test after testing positive for Covid.

“At some point I will have to dip out of international cricket to get that experience, but as English coaches in general we have to get them out and broaden their horizons. If we look at all the big jobs in the world it is Australians, South Africans and Indians that are in those jobs and there are not many English guys taking up those roles.”

The eight Hundred franchises were all coached by foreigners last summer.
