Marcus Rashford could be handed unexpected Erik ten Hag Man United reunion in January transfer window

Manchester United winger Marcus Rashford could be set for an unlikely reunion with former manager Erik ten Hag as the January transfer speculation ramps up.

Last month, Rashford expressed his desire for a new challenge away from Old Trafford but failed to put a timescale on that. Since being dropped by Ruben Amorim for the Premier League clash with Manchester City, Rashford has only been in a matchday squad once - as an unused substitute in the defeat to Newcastle.

On Tuesday night, Rashford posted a video in the gym suggesting that he is over an illness which kept him out of the squad that travelled to Liverpool at the beginning of the month. It is unclear why he was left out of the team that beat Arsenal on penalties.

Now, journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that Borussia Dortmund are keen on moving for Rashford this winter. Sporting director Sebastian Kehl and their head coach Nuri Sahin came to an agreement after Friday's defeat to Bayer Leverkusen that the United winger should be targeted.

However, it is not known how long Sahin will remain in his job with Dortmund languishing in tenth. On Tuesday night, they lost 4-2 to relegation-threatened Holstein Kiel to increase pressure on their current boss.

Meanwhile, Sky Sport Germany understand that Ten Hag has been appointed as a 'shadow coach' at Dortmund to help Sahin. It is thought the Dutchman has a good relationship with the Bundesliga giant's advisor Matthias Sammer which has increased speculation that Ten Hag could replace Sahin should he be sacked.
