Manyama 'saddened' by silverware drought: 'Chiefs deserve a trophy or two every season'

When the season draws to a close in May, Kaizer Chiefs will have nothing to show for it, other than the Carling Black Label Cup, which virtually counts as nothing.

Their trophy drought will also reach an emphatic seven-year mark.

It has been a tough period for the club, so much so that bringing back Stuart Baxter seemed like the last and only resort.

The Scotsman was the last coach to win a major title for Chiefs, and last year in May he returned to bring back similar glory for the club.

However, Chiefs have been knocked out in the early rounds of this seasons MTN8 and Nedbank Cup, which has not help the club and Baxter's cause.

Speaking to the media ahead of the Soweto Derby clash against Orlando Pirates on Saturday, star forward Lebogang Manyama admitted that "soon enough" Chiefs will start winning titles again.

"It has been disappointing as we have not been able to get over the line in the last couple of years," he said.

"We've been in finals and semi-finals, and a club like Chiefs deserves a trophy or two every season, and we are trying.

"What matters most is that we are trying to improve every year, and we've taken huge steps as a team, as individuals, and everybody is in the same line as that coach wants us to take.

"So, there's been a lot of improvement, and I think we are not far off from that, but we'll never be perfect.

"Unfortunately, our fans, we have not given them anything in the last couple of years, and it saddens us, but it's not that we don't want to. Soon enough, we stand a good chance to get over that line."

Saturday's match starts at 15:30.
