Manchester United would be signing the wrong former Man City player with Raheem Sterling deal

"He is a Chelsea player, absolutely," said Pep Guardiola about Raheem Sterling last Friday.

Chelsea have made Sterling surplus to requirements and Guardiola poured cold water over the possibility of Manchester City re-signing the winger at his press conference.

"So I just wish him all the best. If you ask me this question when Gundo was in Barcelona, the answer: the same," Guardiola added. City will not re-sign Sterling but it's not beyond the realms of possibility that he returns to Manchester, this time making a move to Old Trafford.

It must be stressed the chances of Sterling making a sensational move to Manchester United are slim, however, stranger things have happened and shocking transfers can happen.

Sterling could move to United in a swap deal for Jadon Sancho, but Juventus are currently frontrunners to sign the 24-year-old and talks would have to collapse for that move to spark.

It's understood Sterling would be open to a move to United if Juventus fail to progress with a deal for Sancho and several dominos would have to fall perfectly for that to materialise.

United have stressed they would only be prepared to do deals that would aid their profitability and sustainability calculations for next year. United also have two wingers on the right and left-hand sides, with Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount also considered as options on the right.

A move to Juventus for Sancho makes sense, given he seems most effective when playing abroad, and it's impossible not to think that United would be signing the wrong former City player if a swap deal with Sterling somehow got
