Erik ten Hag becomes the eighth manager of Manchester United since Sir Alex Ferguson departed in 2013 and boy does he have a job on his hands if he is to turn last season's sinking ship around.

Signs from pre-season games have largely been promising and it looks like the former Ajax boss is instilling a sense of discipline and team ethic that this group of players so desperately needed. However, personnel clearly still remains an issue because there can be no doubt this side needs upgrades in several departments, most importantly in central midfield.

The Cristiano Ronaldo situation is doing the club, the manager and his teammates no favours whatsoever and it would probably be in everyone's best interests if he could secure a move away from Old Trafford.

It is really difficult to know what to expect from United this season. Progress is imperative but that won't be easy given all of the sides around them in the Premier League have strengthened over the summer.
