Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes disagrees with Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal claim

Manchester United vice-captain Bruno Fernandes has disagreed with Cristiano Ronaldo's claim that new Portugal manager Roberto Martinez has been a "breath of fresh air" with the national team.

Ronaldo recently revealed that he had contemplated retiring from international football following his nation's defeat to Morocco at the World Cup. However, a meeting with Martinez convinced the 38-year-old to remain part of the set-up.

When asked about the former Wigan Athletic, Everton and Belgium manager's impact on the dressing room, Ronaldo hailed his boss' approach. He said: "It’s a new chapter for everyone, for the players, the staff and the country.

"We feel good energy. It’s a breath of fresh air."

Victories over Liechtenstein and Luxembourg have led to an impressive start for Martinez. However, when presented with his international teammate's comments, Fernandes claimed that there has always been a good atmosphere within the Portugal dressing room and that talk of Martinez being a "breath of fresh air" was wide of the mark.

Speaking to Portuguese channel RTP3, United's midfielder said: "No, it's just a new coach with new ideas. There is no breath of fresh air at all.

"It's just a transition period. The atmosphere in the national team has always been good.

"There's never been anything that wasn't fresh of the air, so I think it's just new dynamics, new coach, and you have to assimilate his ideas."

Victories over the two aforementioned European minnows mean Portugal top Group J with maximum points so far. Against Liechtenstein, Ronaldo became the most-capped international footballer of all time.
