Manchester United star backed to rise above 'crazy' critics as 'disgusting' social media trolls slammed

Former Manchester United midfielder Luke Chadwick has backed Harry Maguire to continue to prove his 'crazy' critics wrong on the pitch.

In the summer, United's centre-back was stripped of the captaincy by Erik ten Hag as the Dutchman looked to sell the Englishman to increase funds. However, a move to West Ham fell through in the summer and Maguire remained at Old Trafford.

While he initially had to remain patient, Maguire has since managed to regain a spot in the starting XI as injuries plagued the back line. His performances since his return have surprised some with the England international managing to keep Raphael Varane out of the line-up.

Maguire had been targeted on social media in recent years and Chadwick has spoken out about the abuse he received during his playing days at United and told MEN Sport how pleased he is to see the 30-year-old start to come out of the other side.

"Yeah without a doubt [I am happy for him] in terms of the resilience he has shown," Chadwick explained. "I think linking it to my case, what was completely out of order was the personal abuse Harry received on social media. As a football player you can kind of take the abuse about your football ability that might come your way because you always have confidence in yourself, particularly Harry who has done so well.

"The fact he got so much abuse was crazy really considering the success he has had. Of course he is at the biggest club in the world in Manchester United but I think he would have taken it on the chin people criticising his performance because it is plain to see he always had
