Manchester United showed all of their defensive failings in nine seconds vs Galatasaray

In years to come the three goals Manchester United conceded against Galatasaray at Old Trafford on Tuesday could be used as a video nasty in coaching clinics. A quick reminder of how not to do things.

This was a defensive collapse from a team who have made life too easy for the opposition all season. Every goal involved some level of failure and that doesn't include Andre Onana's mistake that led to Casemiro's red card.

The first equaliser came from a hopeful punt downfield that somehow made it's way deep into United's penalty area after bouncing twice. The second came from a throw-in deep inside the Galatasaray half. The third was a wasteful pass from Sofyan Amrabat at a time when the defensive line was all over the place.

You could go through all three goals and pick out mistakes of an individual and collective nature. Defenders aren't doing their job but the structure isn't helping them. United have conceded 18 goals in 10 games this season and that is the kind of defensive record that will get them nowhere.

But if we had to pick out one goal that would infuriate Erik ten Hag and really highlight United's failings, it would be the second. It's often the way with dead-ball situations that the team that scores from them will feel their homework and creativity has won the day, while the team that concedes will see it as preventable.

That second goal from Kerem Arkturkoglu certainly felt avoidable. It came with 19 minutes to go and with United well on top after Rasmus Hojlund's second goal of the night. Old Trafford was rocking.
