Manchester United send message to Ruud van Nistelrooy after PSV appointment

Manchester United have sent a message to Ruud van Nistelrooy after he was announced as the new head coach of PSV Eindhoven.

Van Nistelrooy made 219 appearances for United, scoring 150 goals after joining them from PSV in 2001. He would eventually leave Old Trafford in 2006 to join Real Madrid after a falling out with Sir Alex Ferguson.

The former Dutch striker was recently linked with a return to United after reports suggested that the Reds were looking to appoint an ex-player to join the coaching staff at the Theatre of Dreams. Van Nistelrooy's name was mentioned after the Manchester Evening News announced that Erik ten Hag had been interviewed for the vacant managerial post at United.

However, any truth to the speculation was squashed today as it was revealed that Van Nistelrooy will take over the hot seat at PSV in the summer on a contract that will last until 2025. Currently, the 45-year-old is in charge of Jong PSV, the senior team's youth side, but he has now been given the backing to take the next step in his managerial career.

In a statement on their website, United wished their former player all the best in his new role. "Good luck with your first managerial role, Ruud," the club said. "Everybody at Manchester United wishes you well."

As for United's vacant managerial post, MEN Sport understands that fans should not expect an 'imminent' announcement to be made. Erik ten Hag remains the frontrunner.
