Manchester United send classy message to academy graduate after serious head injury

Manchester United have issued a statement in support of their former midfielder Angel Gomes after he was hospitalised due to a severe head injury sustained while playing for French side Lille.

The Reds academy graduate was contesting an aerial ball when he collided with Reims defender Amadou Kone which resulted in his dismissal from the game. Gomes's teammates formed a protective circle around the former United star and fans from both sides chanted his name for a lengthy period.

After being stretchered off, Gomes was transported by ambulance and the match restarted after 34 minutes. United's statement following the incident read: "Everyone at Manchester United is sending best wishes to former Reds midfielder Angel Gomes, who suffered a serious head injury while playing for Lille on Saturday."

Following Lille's update which confirmed he had regained consciousness, United wrote on X: "Sending love and strength to Angel Gomes, who has been taken to hospital following a collision while playing for Lille. We’re thinking of you, Angel."

After the game, Lille manager Bruno Genesio spoke to the media about the incident and delivered an update on Gomes's condition. "The latest news is rather reassuring, but it's better to be careful," he said.
