Manchester United's Premier League ambition not matched by suggested Ralf Rangnick successor

Manchester United need a new permanent manager in the summer as Ralf Rangnick's time as interim manager will end. He is due to move into a consultancy role alongside John Murtough overseeing the club's footballing operations.

Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino are the frontrunners for the role. Still, if United cannot convince them to take up the manager's position, other options will be considered.

Luis Enrique has admirers at United. Still, given his commitments to the Spanish national team, it is unlikely he will leave, and other names such have Ruben Amorim and Julien Lopetegui have also been linked with the top job at United.

But one name that didn't seem to go away and was even considered for the United job when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked is Brendan Rodgers.

And all I have to ask is why?

What Rodgers has done at Leicester City is impressive, turning them from the unlikely winners of the Premier League to a stable top eight side. Still, he has done this while also having some of the best player recruitment in the country to support his endeavours, bringing in Youri Tielemans and Patson Daka.

And while Rangnick will hopefully improve this at United, it won't be perfect straight away.

He exceeded his expectations before the start of the season at Leicester and Liverpool by securing Europa League and challenging for a title, respectively. He has consistently failed to exceed them, even when he has pretty comfortably been in a position to do so.

For example, 5th with Leicester is an impressive achievement on paper. Still, it was a disappointing result when Leicester spent several months in the top four only to fall out of the Champions League spots in the final few game weeks.
