Manchester United release statement after fans heard singing about Hillsborough at Anfield

Manchester United have condemned supporters after a group of fans were heard mocking the Hillsborough disaster during Tuesday’s game against Liverpool.

Footage has emerged which appears to show a group of fans singing a chant about the Sun newspaper as they walked towards Anfield ahead of United’s 4-0 defeat on Merseyside. The publication has been widely boycotted in the city after falsely reporting that Liverpool fans were to blame for the 1989 tragedy, which resulted in the deaths of 97 supporters.

Members of the group at the front and back of the crowd can be heard singing the song. Some visiting supporters were also heard chanting the same message towards the home fans during Tuesday night’s game.

United have now commented on the incidents, with the club describing the chants as “completely unacceptable”. It comes days after Manchester City condemned a section of their supporters caused a minute’s silence in memory of the tragedy to be cut short at Wembley.

“Manchester United stands in solidarity with Liverpool FC and its fans in remembering the victims of the Hillsborough disaster,” a club spokesman said. “Offensive chants about the tragedy are completely unacceptable and we will work with our supporters’ groups to educate fans on the issue.”

Last week marked the 33rd anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, in which 97 Liverpool fans were unlawfully killed. The Sun went on to make a number of false claims about supporters on the day under the headline “The Truth”.
