Manchester United rebuild likened to Newcastle ahead of Erik ten Hag appointment

Manchester United's impending summer rebuild has been likened to that of Newcastle United by super-agent Jon Smith. The agent is well known for his involvement in the founding of the Premier League and believes the Red Devils face a similar job in rebuilding their squad to Eddie Howe's side.

Newcastle United became the richest club in world football when PIF completed their takeover at St. James' Park and boasted dreams of grandeur in restoring the Magpies to their former glory. Amanda Staveley said the new owners want Newcastle to compete for the Premier League title and a return to European football.

To do so, Newcastle will need major investment into their squad, which has spent the majority of the campaign languishing at the bottom of the Premier League. Black and white supporters know it will be a while until they're competing for the top honours in England, but Smith believes Manchester United have a similar job on their hands.

Erik ten Hag is the man being touted to take over at Old Trafford at the end of the season. De Godenzonen boss has built quite the reputation for successful rebuilds after losing key players from two different Ajax teams.

He told CaughtOffside: “When it comes to the Red Devils’ problems, both on and off the field – obviously they’re on the lookout for a new manager at the moment and everyone seems to be talking about Erik ten Hag, but I don’t think it is nailed on yet.

“Whoever comes in, they’ve probably got to strip it. This is a three or four year build-back. This is Newcastle United in a different shape or form.
