Manchester United players given stern warning after 'missed opportunity' in FA Cup defeat

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich has called for a change in mentality at the club following the latest in a long line of disappointments this season.

United’s hopes of lifting any silverware are all-but over for the campaign after they were knocked out of the FA Cup at the fourth round stage by Middlesbrough on Friday.

The Champions League offers their only remaining chance of picking up a trophy, but a top four finish looks as though it will be the only thing that can salvage what has been a dismal season at Old Trafford.

Friday’s defeat in the cup perfectly encapsulated the problems that have hounded United all the way through the campaign, and for the past few years for that matter.

Numerous chances were wasted as they failed to dispatch of their Championship opponents, before they suffered the ignominy of a penalty shootout defeat.

And Bosnich believes United’s players need to change their mentality if they’re to still turn things around this season.

“It’s a massive chance missed. I don’t think perhaps even the people at the club realise what a big chance it was,” Bosnich told Sky Sports.

“You have to give a lot of credit to Chris Wilder and Middlesbrough. They hung in there in a game that really should have been beyond them before they got back into it with that controversial goal.
