Off the pace and, as the only outfield player to have started every game, possibly overplayed. Mildly improved in the second-half. 6

Raphael Varane

One of the handful of players who looked affronted by Newcastle riding roughshod over United. Led the backline well again. 7

Lisandro Martinez

Competed consistently and urgent in the first-half, unlike most teammates but his probing passing was neutered. 6

Luke Shaw

Did not lack for effort but caught on his heels too often and he is yet to have an influence in the final third. 5

Casemiro

Did not shirk challenges but was off the pace in the first-half and later booked for an overzealous challenge. Should have had an assist with cross for Marcus Rashford. 6

Fred

If United had an experienced midfielder on the bench then Fred might have come off at half-time. The second-half was not as bad as the first. 4

Antony

One-dimensional at times but provided some impetus during United's flat periods of possession. Did not have pace to burn against Dan Burn. 5

Bruno Fernandes

Neither wedded to the midfielders nor the attackers, he did not create something out of nothing to justify his place. Booked and lacked composure. 4

Jadon Sancho

Started energetically but was not incisive and had little joy against Kieran Trippier. Fell theatrically when a more natural tumble could have earned a penalty. 5

Cristiano Ronaldo

Dropped too deep too often - possibly to ensure he was not flagged offside. Had two goals disallowed - one possibly dubiously. 4
