Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke endorses Sir Jim Ratcliffe investment

Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke believes his former club is heading in the right direction by bringing Sir Jim Ratcliffe on board even if he will only hold a 25 per cent stake.

The INEOS founder and boyhood United supporter has been the favourite to invest in the Reds since last month when his rival Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani withdrew from the process. Ratcliffe had initially cited his intention to purchase a 60 per cent stake in the club but during the year-long process, the 71-year-old opted to rejig his proposal towards a minority acquisition.

It is widely understood Ratcliffe will be announced during the international break. However, there is some scepticism among supporters who wanted to see the Glazers complete a full sale at the end of their 'strategic review'.

On Saturday, fans continued to call for a full sale during a peaceful protest at Old Trafford. Speaking to WSM Casino, Yorke is optimistic about Ratcliffe entering the boardroom despite fans' uneasiness.

He explained: "Sir Jim Ratcliffe is coming now and he's bought 25% of the club. It's hard to comment on the details, but that tells me he won't be in full control, so at least that's a quarter of the club in the right direction.

"It may not have full control, but it gives Ratcliffe enough to get the club to a certain standard. You need to win the domestic league to start attracting the best players, and if we don't do that, we can forget about [Kylian] Mbappe right now. You have to win and show intent to compete against [Manchester] City and Liverpool."
