Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney set to snub 'new' job as management return beckons

Wayne Rooney will be confirmed as Plymouth Argyle's new manager on Saturday, according to a report from The Athletic, snubbing a pundit role at Sky Sports in the process.

Earlier this week it was revealed that the former Derby County and Birmingham City boss was to be interviewed to fill the vacancy at Home Park with it now appearing he is the chosen candidate. Back in January, Rooney was dismissed from his role at Birmingham City after an awful few months in charge with the Blues going on to be relegated from the Championship.

Despite his recent managerial struggles, Rooney is set to be finalised as Plymouth's new head coach. The search to appoint a new man at the helm was led by the club's director of football Neil Dewsip, a man Rooney knows very well having worked alongside him at Everton.

Following a number of appearances as a pundit alongside the likes of Roy Keane and Rio Ferdinand, Rooney will represent the BBC at this summer's European championships. More studio time looked set to follow but that will change as a management return for the 38-year-old beckons.

The Manchester United legend has appeared as a studio guest for both TNT Sports and Sky Sports towards the latter stages of the season. Following the defeat to Arsenal, Rooney issued a damning verdict on United where he brutally suggested over 20 players could be sold.

"You have to build the team around Bruno [Fernandes]," he said following the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal earlier this month. "He's the one player with quality, he has got fight in him."
