Manchester United handed Erik ten Hag transfer warning after nightmare start

Former Manchester United midfielder Johnny Giles has urged the Reds board to back new manager Erik ten Hag.

Just three new faces have arrived at Old Trafford this summer as Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez put pen to paper on deals in Manchester. With Casemiro on the verge of becoming the much-needed midfield addition for the Dutchman, United are still licking their wounds from back-to-back defeats to Brighton and Brentford.

The Reds have been touted with a number of new faces across the pitch around Europe. Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong has been a name linked with a move as part of a summer-long saga but the Brazilian from their rivals Real Madrid looks set to be the latest signing.

But for the former Republic of Ireland international, he has demanded that Ten Hag should be backed to help improve the squad. He told Off The Ball: " You’re looking for players who want to come to the club, who want to play for Manchester United, who want to play for the manager.

"That’s the start, when they go out on the field they’re doing the best they possibly can then you get the team spirit going. You’re looking for as good players as you can get in any position but Manchester United should be in a situation where, I think the manager should be in a situation where he knows who he wants and then he’s got to be backed by the board.

"We don’t know what the situation is there, we don’t know whether he has the authority to get the players in he wants or not. At the moment it doesn’t look like it because they’ve hardly got any players in at the moment."
