Manchester United give team news and Raphael Varane injury update for Everton fixture

Raphael Varane will face a late fitness test to determine if he is available for Manchester United at Everton on Sunday.

Varane came off in the 40th minute of United's 6-3 shellacking by Manchester City last week with an ankle injury and did not travel to Cyprus for their 3-2 Europa League win against Omonia Nicosia.

The Manchester Evening News reported on Monday Varane was not expected to be sidelined for a long-term period but that United medical staff were treating his injury with caution.

United stayed in Cyprus on Thursday evening and trained in Nicosia on Friday as "it is the best in relation to recovery and preparation for the game on Sunday", according to manager Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag confirmed captain Harry Maguire is still out this weekend with a thigh strain.

"Difficult to say," Ten Hag said of Varane. " Varane made progress and I hope he is available but I think it will be close.

"From the other players, Harry Maguire not (fit), then it's Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Donny van de Beek, both not."

United flirted with disaster in Nicosia, where they trailed Omonia 1-0 at half-time and conceded again in the 84th minute but held on for a second successive group stage win.

Everton have not lost since August 13 and are unbeaten in their last seven games, having only conceded seven goals in eight in the Premier League.

Ten Hag is expected to make noteworthy changes from the derby, with Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho in danger of being dropped after they were substituted at half-time on Thursday night.

The duo were dreadful at City, where Malacia was also hooked at the interval, but Ten Hag reiterated he would protect players struggling for form.
