Manchester United delivered ruthless Andre Onana transfer verdict amid David De Gea comparison
Manchester United's head coach, Ruben Amorim, is reportedly on the hunt for a new goalkeeper to challenge Andre Onana. Manchester Evening News readers agree and are unhappy with the goalkeeper's recent performances.
Despite a strong start to the season initially, the 28-year-old has made several high-profile mistakes since Amorim took the reins at Old Trafford. Amorim is said to be keen to bring in a keeper who can compete with Onana for the number one spot, with Altay Bayindir not viewed as a serious contender.
Bayindir, who transferred to United from Fenerbahce for £4.3million in September 2023, has only played four times for the club - all in FA Cup and League Cup matches. Onana has let in 26 goals in 19 Premier League games this season and had a particularly poor December, making errors against Nottingham Forest, Viktoria Plzen and Wolves.
His hesitation at corners was capitalised on by Arsenal, who scored both goals from corner kicks in their 2-0 win over United, before Wolves' Matheus Cunha scored directly from a corner in United's 2-0 defeat at Molineux. United paid Inter Milan £47.2m for Onana just a year after he left Ajax on a free transfer and the Cameroon international has managed 20 clean sheets in 70 appearances.
Commenter 1954brad thinks: “Newcastle scored two from balls floated to the six yard line, they are the keepers every day of the week. Onana is rooted to his line, he was signed for his ball skills and passing, but even that is not very good. A new keeper, striker and left-wing-back are a necessity this window, without these we will get dragged even further into a relegation fight. And as much as I feel for Zirkzee he must know if you don't perform well you're likely to be subbed.”
