Manchester United defender Harry Maguire receives apology from Ghanaian parliament

A member of the Ghanaian parliament has apologised to Harry Maguire following a turnaround in fortunes for the Manchester United player.

Maguire made just eight league starts last season and he was bizarrely joked about in Ghanaian parliament in December 2022, with an official comparing the country's bleak economic situation to his defending. But Isaac Adongo, the man responsible for the joke, has now issued an apology for his comments that went viral on social media.

Adongo compared Maguire to Ghana's vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, when he initially described them both as poor performers, but he retracted his statement and praised the centre-back for his turnaround this season.

"Harry Maguire is now scoring goals for Manchester United. Maguire is now a key player for Manchester," Adongo said on Tuesday.

The original clip of Adongo speaking in Ghanaian parliament last year received millions of views in a difficult season for Maguire in which he lost his starting role and was given limited opportunities by United manager Erik ten Hag.

Maguire was stripped of the captaincy in the summer and Bruno Fernandes was given the armband. West Ham made an offer to sign the defender and he was expected to leave but he was happy to fight for his place.

The 30-year-old England international has since enjoyed a renaissance and he's started the last five Premier League games for United. Maguire also scored the winning goal in a 1-0 win against FC Copenhagen at Old Trafford in the Champions League.
