Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag shoots down Kobbie Mainoo comparisons to legendary Dutch midfielder

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has played down comparisons between teenage midfielder Kobbie Mainoo and legendary figure Clarence Seedorf.

Mainoo, 18, has made an instant impact for United after graduating from the club's academy this season. The young prospect has quickly become a fixture in Ten Hag's side and has produced several stellar displays, notably scoring the winning goal against Wolves in February.

His rapid adaptation to senior football and standout performances have led to early comparisons with Seedorf, one of the best midfield players of his day. Seedorf's trophy-laden career saw him win the Champions League with three different clubs. However, Ten Hag wants Mainoo to develop a unique style and has warned against comparing him to another midfielder.

"So I think never ever compare players with another player. Never. Because Kobbie Mainoo, but also other players, they build their own identity. Don't compare with anyone. His skillset, that is so typical. And it's so Kobbie Mainoo, it's nothing to do with other players.", Ten Hag said, as reported by the Mirror.

"Of course, he can learn from other players, especially from great players as Clarence Seedorf was. But Kobbie Mainoo is Kobbie Mainoo. He has big potential and I'm quite sure he will have a big career."
