Manchester United are getting a transfer window warning from Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea

Premier League transfer windows can often be a slow burn. A few well-run clubs will get their house in order early but the real drama usually involved the trolley dash in the final weeks of August.

But this season that narrative looks to be changing. Maybe more clubs than ever before are realising the value of getting their squad in shape sooner rather than later, but the biggest clubs in the league have made a busy start to a summer of trading.

The transfer window might not be open until September 1 but leaving it until the final hours to conclude deals can be both expensive and self-defeating. You only need to look at Manchester United in 2022 for evidence of that.

They spent £155million on Casemiro and Antony in the last 10 days of the window. Both deals were relatively successful, but certainly the latter was more expensive than it needed to be. United also started the season with successive Premier League defeats, which may have been avoidable had the squad been together and settled by then.

Erik ten Hag will be desperate for the club to avoid that mistake this season and the negotiations over Mason Mount have at least started early. United insist there is a limit to what they will pay for a 24-year-old available for nothing in a year's time, but there is an expectation the deal will get done. It might be more difficult to bring in a goalkeeper and a striker.

By the time last season started, United had only signed Tyrell Malacia (July 4), Christian Eriksen (July 15) and Lisandro Martinez (July 27). They had only sold Andreas Pereira (July 11), with deals for Tahith Chong and James Garner only completed on deadline day.
