Manchester United and Erik ten Hag must learn Aaron Wan-Bissaka transfer lesson

In the summer of 2019, Manchester United dedicated £50m of their transfer budget to Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The Englishman arrived from Crystal Palace for a hefty amount at the time but after three years at Old Trafford, his future appears in doubt.

Wan-Bissaka was once a regular starter under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but gradually, his stock has fallen and his form has deteriorated. Many fans are now calling for him to be part of the squad exodus this summer.

Shortly after United brought him to the club, comments made in the media by Solskjaer captured the underlying issues with the move from the very start. The Norwegian was asked about his vision for his team, but his response almost conflicted with Wan-Bissaka's skill set.

"We want to be a team that can go and dominate and break teams down," he said. "It has taken Liverpool a few years to get to that state and we need to keep on building. Yes, we're good at counter-attacking, but we need to be better at breaking down lower blocks."

Given the strength and status of United, the players sporting the famous jersey are regularly presented with the challenge of opening up stubborn defences. The large majority of opponents are relatively satisfied with taking a point from the Red Devils, so the onus is on United to generate solutions.

Wan-Bissaka, for all of his defensive ability, never seemed truly suited to performing as a net positive for a possession-based team. Aside from his quality on the dribble, the 24-year-old isn't particularly creative on the ball and opponents have exploited his lack of weaponry.
