Manchester United agree first loan departure of January transfer window

Manchester United youngster Ethan Ennis is joining Doncaster Rovers on loan for the remainder of the season.

The Manchester Evening News reported in December that Ennis was attracting interest from teams throughout the English pyramid and Doncaster have now agreed a deal to take him on loan.

Ennis' move was set to determined by which club could pitch the best plan for his development and Doncaster have outlined how the exciting young winger will fit into their squad.

United's Under-21s played Doncaster in the EFL Trophy in September and Ennis scored in that game. It's understood Ennis' performance sparked the interest from Doncaster and it's hoped the 20-year-old can continue his excellent run of form during his time with the League Two side.

Ennis' departure is set to be the first loan arranged by United in this January window and he was at the front of the queue following an excellent first half of the season with the U21s.

The youngster has 10 goals in 15 appearances. His goals in the National League Cup have been important and he notched a hat-trick against Altrincham in a 4-0 win in November.

Ennis was given a new two-year contract in the summer as his previous deal expired in 2025. He celebrated his 20th birthday last month and the loan represents a fresh challenge.

Although Ennis has played in each attacking position in this campaign, it's thought his long-term future will be on the left wing and he is building a reputation as a goalscoring winger.

Ennis began his career with rivals Liverpool, but he was signed by United in the summer of 2021 and he was the standout signing for the academy in an otherwise quiet window.
