Manchester City target two more signings with midfielder and left-back top priority

Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak is targeting two more signings after beating “every big team in the world” to Erling Haaland. 

Haaland has arrived from Borussia Dortmund in a £51million deal despite competition from Real Madrid for the Norway striker, while City are also in the market for a midfielder to replace Fernandinho and a left-back. 

Brighton’s Marc Cucurella is one of the left-back’s City have been looking at, while Leeds United's Kalvin Phillips is the first choice for strengthening Pep Guardiola’s midfield.  

“I can confirm that there will be more players coming in,” said Khaldoon. “We are looking to strengthen the team in the areas we need strengthening. Every season some players leave and we have to refresh the team. We always look at improving and strengthening. I anticipate we will be doing a couple more.”

City will also have Julian Alvarez arriving from River Plate after a deal for the Argentina striker, 22, was thrashed out in January. But it is the signing of Haaland, whose father Alfie played for City, that has generated excitement after the striker was chased by Europe’s biggest clubs. 

“At start there is a lot of history,” said Khaldoon. “Alfie played for the club which is a nice historic connection with the family. Haaland from his early days in Norway and moving on to Dortmund has been on our radar for four to five years. 

“We ahve been following his progression and seeing his transition from very talented high quality high potential young player to one of the most if not the most exciting striker in the world.
