Man Utd transfer round-up: Osimhen responds to speculation as De Jong alternative eyed

Things are hotting up for Manchester United now the summer transfer window has officially been opened, with Erik ten Hag eyeing up reinforcements.

Midfield is a clear area of interest for United, who are set to lose Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard at the end of the month. Barcelona ’s Frenkie de Jong remains a key target for Ten Hag, with negotiations under way, while the proposition of signing Christian Eriksen as a free agent has excited United chiefs.

But there remains much more to do, with signings in other positions – and departures – needed at Old Trafford. The success of the upcoming 2022/23 campaign could hinge on United’ work in the off-season, so let’s take a look at the latest transfer rumours surrounding the club.

Much of the focus is currently on who could arrive at United this summer, but ESPN reports that much will depend on the future of Anthony Martial. The 26-year-old has just returned from a loan spell at Sevilla which didn’t go to plan and United may therefore struggle to find suitors.

Martial, who is under contract until June 2024 and earns a reported £240,000 per week, is unlikely to have a place in Ten Hag’s side next season. United are keen to strengthen their attack this summer, with Ajax’s Antony and RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku both on the club’s radar.

But with Pogba, Matic, Mata and Lingard leaving, midfield is where the priority lies. That means the ability to bring in a player of Antony or Nkunku’s stature could depend on getting Martial’s hefty wages off the books.

Another player who has been linked with Manchester United in recent weeks is Napoli striker Victor Osimhen. With Darwin Nunez off to Liverpool and Erling Haaland joining Manchester City, United
