Man Utd could swoop for £67m "sensational talent" this summer - Transfer insider

Manchester United will view Benfica striker Darwin Nunez as ‘an option’ in the upcoming summer transfer window, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Red Devils announced Ajax manager Erik ten Hag as their new boss recently, and the 52-year-old is expected to be backed financially when the market reopens for business.

Multiple sides from across the continent have been credited with an interest in Nunez of late, but United, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain have been listed as the ‘three front-runners’ by The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

It’s claimed that Benfica are ‘open to a sale’ and are expected to demand around €70 million (£58.2m) for their prized asset, with initial conversations expected to conclude in the coming weeks.

Yet transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has claimed the Eagles have actually slapped a €80m (£66.6m) price tag on Nunez as they look to profit from the intense interest in the forward.

Romano also disclosed that the Uruguay international ‘will leave’ the Estádio da Luz following the conclusion of the current campaign, though, and that the Red Devils’ hierarchy have ‘already discussed his name internally’.

Newly rich Newcastle United are also believed to be keeping close tabs on Nunez’s situation, who has been described as a ‘sensational talent’, yet the player is said to only be keen on clubs playing in European competitions.

Due to his impressive performances throughout 2021/22, Jones believes Nunez is ‘being touted around half of Europe’ and that he’s a player United will consider an approach for.
